Meaningful Ornament: Planet HOME

TISHMAN ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN CENTER (TEDc): The New School Centennial Celebration Proposal

‘Meaningful Ornament: Planet HOME’ Installation, by TEDc Affiliated Faculty Johanne Woodcock in the Sheila Johnson Design Center, Parsons.

As an affiliated faculty at the Tishman Environmental Design I am pleased to present an installation of ‘Meaningful Ornament: Planet HOME’.

White walled interiors are everywhere as the purview of the interior designer who has a unique opportunity to activate these surfaces, to enhance and expand the interior experience.

This installation forefronts the physical conditions of our planet.

Imagery covers the walls and floor with views of the earth, centered on the arctic.  Two representations describing the arctic are presented to highlight changes occurring. The text ‘Unusual Arctic Ice Melt’ circles selected views.

In addition to the painted surfaces, floor, and walls, are framed illustrations of additional Meaningful Ornament Design Proposals, pursuing directions in

Abstraction, Illusion and Narrative Wall Painting.  This work acknowledges the importance of data from the National Air and Space Administration (NASA) , exhibiting global temperature anomalies from 1880 to 2018  in the Illusion Study and National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) rising sea level projections shown in the Narrative Study.

Preceding the Installation Reception is a film screening of ‘Surviving Progress’ by Harold Crooks and Mathieu Roy (2012) and discussion on Climate Change with the filmmaker Harold Crooks, Nadia Elrokhsy and invited student and alumni respondents.
